Flatland is the most comprehensive documentation of the landscape architecture of the renowned campus of IIT with landscapes by Alfred Caldwell, Peter Schaudt, Chandra Goldsmith Gray, and others. The chapter established the natural history of the site—beginning with an exploration of this area of Chicago being the only place in the Midwest where the Great Prairies met the Great Lakes.
