A small urban garden in Kaki-no-ki-zaka (Hill of Persimmons) Tokyo is enriched by subtle variations in the ground plane and by the shifting heights and materials of bamboo, cedar, and plaster screens. The gridded plaster screen is constructed with a mixture of burnt straw, mud, and fine pebbles by the traditional plaster craftsman, Kayayama Sakan. The wooden screen is stained with traditional fermented persimmon. The garden is a careful composition of two trees, one shrub, five bamboo, a stone path, a water well, and a wooden platform enclosed by gridded screen.
