Ron Henderson is invited to deliver a talk for the Landscape Lecture Series at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. Lirio has a two decade association with the museum, including gardens for the museum expansion in 2012.

Dessiner la Vitalité // Drawing Liveliness, Montréal
Ron Henderson, Nicole Valois, and Claude Cormier spoke on “Drawing Liveliness” at a roundtable convened by Margot Lystra at the Université de Montréal. The previous day, Ron Henderson led a botanical drawing workshop with Landscape Architecture students using Japanese orihon, or folding sketchbooks. Drawing is the entrance of thought.
Curiosity Unplugged
Ron Henderson joined IIT faculty colleagues in an episode of the podcast, Curiosity Unplugged, on WIIT Radio. The episode, “What Does China’s Rise Mean for the United States?” discusses the current alliances and competition between China and the United States.
Chicago-Beijing Parks Collaborative
Ron Henderson joined Arnold Randall, Director of Cook County Forests and Preserves, and Terry Guen, Landscape Architect, for a workshop and collaborative exchange in Beijing with Beijing Forestry and Parks Department as well as Beijing Forestry University. The workshop grew out of an initiative launched by Beijing and Chicago mayors to exchange expertise into integrating and managing ecological systems in public lands.
Senator Sheldon Whitehouse awarded 2019 Olmsted Medal
Ron Henderson and Tanya Kelley presented the ASLA Olmsted Medal to Senator Sheldon Whitehouse. The Olmsted Medal was instituted in 1990 to recognize individuals, organizations, agencies, or programs outside the profession of landscape architecture for environmental leadership, vision, and stewardship. The Medal honors Frederick Law Olmsted, considered the founder of the American landscape architecture profession and steward of the environment.
Infrastructure and Landscape, Wenzhou Kean University
Ron Henderson delivered the keynote address, “The Driverless City and Other Projects,” for the Symposium, Infrastructure and Landscape, at Wenzhou Kean University (Wenzhou, China).
National Science Foundation, Healthy Urban Waters
Ron Henderson is an invited contributor to the Healthy Urban Waters symposium funded by the National Science Foundation.
Tongji Future Cities Workshop
Ron Henderson presented the Driverless City Project at the 2019 International Future Cities Doctoral Workshop at Tongji University, Shanghai. The subsequent discussion was structured on these questions: How can urban public spaces be designed to serve human needs and social equity during increased growth of autonomous vehicles? How can designers employ the latest developments in mapping tools and navigation software in understanding and creating design interventions? What design opportunities exist between balancing autonomous vehicle navigation with meaningful civic spaces?
National Park Service Artist-in-Residence
Ron Henderson was selected as National Park Service 2019 Artist-in-Residence at Indiana Dunes National Park during which he investigated trees under environmental stresses such as sand dune migration, lakeshore erosion, water inundation, and wind shear.
Sakura Orihon at Lake Forest Garden Club
Ron Henderson was invited to give a talk, Sakura Orihon, for the Lake Forest Garden Club. Sakura Orihon refers to Japanese cherry trees, sakura, and Japanese folding sketchbooks, orihon. The talk explored the horticultural and cultural dialectics of cherry trees and cherry blossoms in Japan.

ETSAB Barcelona lecture
Ron Henderson is invited to deliver a lecture, Shallow Water Cities, at L'Escola Tècnica Superior d'Arquitectura de Barcelona, ETSAB Barcelona. The lecture is structured around landscapes of estuaries and lacustrine ecologies in which Lirio has designed over the past decade - including Ningbo, Beijing, Fuzhou, Nantes, and Providence.
Elizabethan Theatre at Chateau D’Hardelot Wins World Architecture News Best Wood Building of the Year
The Hardelot Elizabethan Theatre has been recognized as the best wood building of the year by World Architecture News (WAN). Among other attributes, the prefabricated cross-laminated timber construction enabled the conservation of a grove of majestic horse chestnuts in which the theater is nestled.

LIRIO collaborated with 3six0 Architects on the Hither Hills House which received a 2017 AIAri Honor Award for Design.
Driverless City Project Receives Award
The American Society of Landscape Architects – Rhode Island recognized The Driverless City Project with the Award for Communication in their biennial awards program.
Harleston Parker Medal Awarded to Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum
The Harleston Parker Medal was established in 1921 by J. Harleston Parker to recognize “the most beautiful piece of architecture, building, monument or structure within the limits of the City of Boston or of the Metropolitan Parks District” and is awarded annually in a juried selection by the Boston Society of Architects. The 2015 Harleston Parker Medal was awarded to the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum Addition by Renzo Piano Building Workshop and Stantec. L+A Landscape Architecture designed the gardens of the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum Addition.
Elizabethan Theatre at Chateau D’Haardelot Nominated for European Union Prize
The Hardelot Elizabethan Theatre has been nominated for the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture – Mies van der Rohe Award, the EU’s most prestigious biennial prize for contemporary architecture. L+A was consulting Landscape Architect with Studio Andrew Todd for the project. December 2016
